Spectator Dies After Falling from Stand During Nations League Final in Munich

Финальный матч Лиги наций между сборными Португалии и Испании, прошедший на стадионе в Мюнхене, завершился трагедией — один из зрителей скончался после падения с трибуны. Все попытки спасти его оказались безрезультатными.

The fatal accident occurred during the intense final match at Munich’s football arena, as confirmed by a police spokesperson early Monday morning. For reasons not yet clarified, the man fell approximately eight meters from the middle tier onto a staircase in the lower section. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene despite immediate rescue efforts.

Police Suspect Accidental Fall

Investigators from the Munich criminal police department launched an inquiry shortly after the incident. According to preliminary analysis of the stadium’s surveillance footage, no evidence of third-party involvement was found. Authorities currently believe the event to have been a tragic accident. The exact cause of the fall, which happened during the first half of extra time, remains unknown. Officials later identified the deceased as a man from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district.

Shock During Extra Time

Emergency responders, security staff, and police officers rushed to the area beneath the press section where the man had fallen. Distressed spectators alerted nearby paramedics, who arrived quickly. The medical team made repeated efforts to resuscitate the fan behind a screen set up for privacy but were ultimately unsuccessful.

Players and staff from both the Portuguese and Spanish teams appeared unaware of the incident as the match continued. Even during the trophy presentation following the dramatic penalty shootout, there was no public acknowledgment of the tragedy that had unfolded in the stands.

Condolences from Football Officials and Coaches

News of the fan’s death only reached the teams after the game had concluded. Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martínez expressed his sorrow, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of this fan. It is terrible news.” Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente also offered his condolences during a post-match press conference: “My sympathies go out to the family and loved ones of this supporter.”

The UEFA released an official statement offering its condolences and expressing solidarity with the deceased’s family. On Pentecost Monday, the German Football Association (DFB) also extended its sympathies via social media, stating: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the fan who lost his life during the Nations League final in Munich. This tragic event deeply saddens us.”

Despite extensive medical intervention, the man was declared dead shortly after midnight, according to the event organizers’ final report.
