Postal Service Dispatches 1.1 Million Municipal Election Notices in Munich

The German Postal Service (Deutsche Post) has taken charge of both distributing election notices and delivering completed absentee ballots. Residents of Munich have been advised to observe specific regulations to ensure their votes are counted.

Munich — In the coming days, Deutsche Post will deliver approximately 1.1 million election notices to eligible voters in Munich. Fabian Miesel, head of the Munich-Germering postal center at Deutsche Post, noted: “We have prepared intensively for the transfer of a large volume of critical election documents and are fully aware of our responsibility. For the City of Munich, we managed the sorting and distribution of notices, the processing of absentee ballot applications, and the sorting of ballots returned by voters.”

Early Application for Absentee Ballots Recommended

According to the postal service, the distribution of election documents and ballots is being carried out in accordance with the highest standards of quality and data protection. Postal centers have meticulously prepared for the receipt, sorting, and delivery of all notices.

To ensure that absentee ballots reach the municipal election office on time, Deutsche Post has recommended that Munich residents apply for their documents well in advance and mail the completed ballot no later than three working days before the election. The authorities estimate that approximately 350,000 Munich residents will utilize the mail-in voting option. However, the city will not begin dispatching the actual ballot documents until February 16.

When mailed within Germany, the election envelope does not require postage stamps; however, stamps are necessary when mailing from abroad. Due to longer transit times from other countries, the postal service recommends using airmail. The ballot must reach the election office no later than 6:00 PM on Sunday, election day, as that is when voting concludes and the counting of votes begins.
