Munich Museums Open Between Christmas and New Year: A Holiday Guide

For those seeking a change of pace during the festive season, Munich's museums offer an extensive program. Below is an overview of the institutions that remain open and welcome visitors at the end of December.

Munich — The end of the year is the perfect time to take a brief break from the holiday hustle and bustle, perhaps through a peaceful visit to an exhibition. While most Munich museums are closed on December 24, several institutions adjust their hours for the subsequent holidays. However, many galleries remain open and invite visitors for tours.

Operating Hours for Munich Museums During the Festive Period

A classic destination in Munich is the Deutsches Museum. This institution of science and technology will remain closed on December 24 and 25. Visiting becomes possible starting from the second day of Christmas: from December 26, the site will reopen as usual at 9:00 AM. On New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the museum will be closed again. A similar schedule applies to the Transport Museum near Bavaria Park—which is particularly popular with children—and the Aviation Museum branch in Schleißheim.

The Museum of Man and Nature offers exhibitions in the fields of natural sciences and environmental history, making it a great choice for family outings. During the Christmas period, the museum will be closed on December 24, 25, 31, and January 1. On all other days between the holidays, visitors can explore the exhibits at their leisure.

Munich Exhibitions: From Classics to Modern Formats

The Lenbachhaus in Munich is closed only on December 24. On all other days at the end of the year, visitors can view various exhibitions from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (closing at 3:00 PM on December 31). Featured highlights include the exhibition “The Blue Rider: A New Language,” which brings together about 240 works by the artist group, including classic masterpieces by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. The multimedia exhibition “Out of Focus” is also available, catering to fans of contemporary photography and critical perspectives in art.

The Villa Stuck and the Hypo-Kunsthalle are also open every day except December 24. At the Kunsthalle, the popular exhibition “Digital by Nature”—currently the largest solo exhibition of Miguel Chevalier in Europe—will run until March 2026. A key part of the program is the “In Vitro Pixel Flowers” installation, where children and adults can experiment with virtual flowers online, which then bloom in a digital greenhouse inside the exhibition hall.Source: Data from Munich cultural institutions
