Flea Markets with Children’s Program and Street Food to Take Place in Munich from August 21 to 23

The summer flea market season in Munich is returning to its active phase. Following a quiet holiday weekend on August 15, when all of Bavaria celebrated Assumption Day, Munich residents can once again set out in search of valuable finds across the city's open-air trading venues.

From August 21 to 23, Munich will offer its usual array of flea markets featuring books, clothing, toys, furniture, collectables, and much more. Below is a detailed schedule of all flea markets taking place this weekend, along with several practical tips for prospective visitors.

Main Events of the Weekend

The primary point of attraction for antique lovers remains the Alte Paketposthalle-the former mail sorting terminal located on the grounds of Pineapple Park. Built by Deutsche Bundespost between 1965 and 1969, the column-free concrete structure spans nearly 148 meters in width and was considered the world’s largest facility of its type at the time of construction.

Since 1996, the building has been designated a protected architectural monument. Following the closure of the mail sorting facility at the end of 2024, it has served as a temporary venue for cultural and sporting events pending the construction of the new PaketPost Quartier residential district.

On Friday evening, the building traditionally transforms into a night flea market.

Starting at 5:00 PM, the venue hosts the weekly Midnightbazar, featuring street food, live music, and a curated selection of vintage items mixed with modern goods. This flea market format has established itself as a regular weekly event. In addition to the night market, the venue hosts a children’s flea market twice a month, having previously hosted the Waxsafari vinyl record market as well.

The second notable event of the weekend is the Kulturstrand-Flohmarkt at the Vater-Rhein-Brunnen fountain.

On Sunday from 12:00 PM onward, visitors can browse items for purchase or exchange pre-owned goods directly with other attendees. During the summer, the market operates on a second-Sunday-of-the-month schedule, with the upcoming date falling on August 23.

Advice for Flea Market Visitors

A few simple rules can help ensure a successful outing for buyers and sellers alike:

* For Buyers: Those searching for furniture, lighting, or other large items should measure their spaces in advance. Dimensions should be verified against prospective purchases on site, as preparation is significantly easier than attempting to locate a seller for a return. Items should be thoroughly inspected for condition and completeness prior to payment. Sellers at these markets generally do not provide warranties or accept returns.

* For Sellers: Establishing a target price for each item in advance while leaving room for negotiation is standard practice across all Munich flea markets. Bundling similar items-such as children’s books or tableware-can free up stall space quickly while allowing buyers to purchase multiple needed items at once.

Summary

Following the quiet holiday period in mid-August, the weekend of August 21-23 restores Munich’s regular flea market cadence. The variety of venues-ranging from a night market beneath the arches of a former post office to a Sunday swap meet at Vater-Rhein-Brunnen-offers ample choice for anyone spending the weekend in search of specific items.

For those interested in historic architecture, the Alte Paketposthalle is particularly noteworthy. While preparation for the district’s redevelopment continues, the hall remains open to the public.
