According to authorities, the suspect—who is also homeless—is accused of using a lighter to ignite the clothing of a 57-year-old man who was asleep near the Alter Südfriedhof cemetery. The attack took place during the evening hours and left the victim with burn injuries to his back.
Several quick-thinking passersby noticed the burning man and managed to extinguish the flames using water bottles. Emergency services transported the victim to a hospital, where he received outpatient treatment and was later discharged.
Police apprehended the suspect shortly after the incident near the scene. He was brought before an investigating judge who issued an arrest warrant. The man is currently being held in pretrial detention.
Munich’s homicide division has taken over the investigation, working to determine the motive and further details surrounding the assault.
