Extension of Munich’s U5 Subway Line in the West Makes Progress

Munich / Laim – Work on extending the U5 subway line in western Munich is progressing. On Gotthardstraße, work on the diaphragm walls has been completed on schedule—a milestone for the “cover construction method” being used there, as the City of Munich explains.

There is also reason for local residents to rejoice: large construction machinery can now leave the site. This will result in less dust and noise. The city can now proceed to complete the concrete tunnel cover. The approximately 1.20-meter-wide and 30-meter-deep diaphragm walls on both sides of Gotthardstraße form the statically robust, waterproof outer shell of the subway structure. 66,000 tons of concrete were used for this purpose.

U5 Extension in Munich: Progress Not Just on Gotthardstraße

Along the route between Laimer Platz and the future “Baumschule Laim” subway station, bore piles for the dewatering shafts are currently being installed every 100 meters. These are necessary to ensure groundwater balance later on. Work is also progressing elsewhere in parallel; diaphragm wall work has been completed at the starting shaft west of the “Baumschule Laim” station.

At “Am Knie,” necessary sewer and bore pile work for the outer walls of the new station on the southern side has been underway since the beginning of the year. Furthermore, two temporary bridges have been built over the existing pedestrian and cyclist underpasses at Pasing Station. A new road surface for traffic will be created on top of these. This replaces the southern side of Josef-Felder-Straße, as work on the diaphragm walls there is set to begin in autumn. Consequently, traffic on Josef-Felder-Straße will be maintained in both directions, but reduced to one lane each. The underpasses for travelers at Pasing Station will remain open at all times.

In construction section 1, all concrete work for the covers is expected to be completed by April 2026. After that, work will continue beneath the cover—involving full excavation and construction of the tunnel base. This will be followed by the fitting-out of the subway facility.

Interested parties can find comprehensive information about the U5 extension at the U5 Info Center at Willibaldstraße 70. Every Wednesday (except public holidays) from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., experts from the subway construction project are available there to answer questions and address concerns.
