Woman Rescued from St. Peter’s Church Tower in Central Munich

A 35-year-old woman was rescued in a complex operation from the observation deck of St. Peter's Church tower ("Alter Peter") in Munich on Sunday afternoon. The police reported this in a press release.

At around 2:50 PM, units from the Munich Fire Department were called to the old town. According to the police report, the 35-year-old woman had fallen while descending the famous church tower and sustained serious injuries. An ambulance and a paramedic vehicle were already on the scene and urgently requested support.

Operation in Central Munich: Crowd Applauds Impressive Rescue Efforts

The problem was that the injured woman could not be evacuated via the historic tower’s narrow spiral staircase due to the nature of her injuries. She needed to be transported in a lying position, which was impossible in the tight confines inside St. Peter’s. A specially trained team of high-angle rescue specialists from the Munich Fire Department devised an unconventional solution: they set up a rope descent system from the observation platform at a height of approximately 60 meters down to the ground, as later described by the police.

Using this improvised cable system, the patient was safely lowered to the ground, accompanied by an experienced high-angle rescuer. The unusual rescue operation attracted numerous onlookers who watched the proceedings. According to the police, the spectators were so impressed by the rescuers’ professional work that they broke into spontaneous applause following the successful evacuation.

Subsequently, the 35-year-old woman was transported by ambulance to a Munich hospital. How the fall occurred during the descent from St. Peter’s is unknown to the fire department, as stated in the press release. St. Peter’s is one of Munich’s most popular viewing platforms, attracting hundreds of visitors daily who climb the 299 steps to the observation deck.
