Munich/Salzburg — The girls were attending a ski camp in Austria when they were involved in an accident during a sledding descent. According to the Salzburg Police, both 13-year-old girls were hospitalized following the severe incident. On Friday, it was confirmed that one of the children had died from her injuries. The victims were students at the Luitpold-Gymnasium in Arabellapark, Munich. The camp was hosted near Rauris, a community in the Salzburg region known as a popular family ski destination.
“This is a tragedy,” confirmed school principal Renate Matthias on Friday evening. “Unfortunately, I must confirm the death of a student. She had an accident yesterday and passed away today.” The principal could not provide specific details regarding the mechanics of the accident or the current condition of the second girl. However, she noted that teachers on-site reported the students had received safety instructions and were properly equipped: “Of course, they were wearing helmets,” she stated.
Collision with Tree Proves Fatal
According to police reports, the accident occurred around 11:20 AM on Thursday at a local ski resort. While descending toward the valley, the sled carrying the two girls veered off the track for unknown reasons and struck a tree at the edge of the run. Both students sustained varying degrees of injury and were evacuated to the hospital via rescue helicopter.
Authorities are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the crash. They reminded the public that in the state of Salzburg, wearing a helmet is mandatory for children under the age of 15.
The Kreuzboden sledding run remains open daily. Rauris, a market town with a population of approximately 3,000, is one of the largest municipalities in the Hohe Tauern National Park—the largest protected natural area in the Alps.
