The rural community is now left wondering what happened to the missing animals. Whether they were deliberately captured remains unclear, as no evidence has surfaced so far.
Pet Owners Report Sudden Disappearances
According to Mayor Gerhard List (CSU), several cat owners reported that their pets suddenly failed to return home. Some of them have since filed complaints with the police.
No Signs of Poison or Predators
The mayor stated that police have increased their presence in the 1,200-resident community, carrying out more frequent patrols. So far, however, officers have not observed any suspicious vehicles, nor have they found poisoned bait or animal remains. A local hunter also confirmed that he had not discovered any carcasses in the area. For this reason, authorities do not believe that a wild animal such as a fox or wolf is responsible for the disappearances.
Confined to Kohlberg – Not Neighboring Villages
So far, the missing cats all came from an area within roughly a one-kilometer radius. Neighboring communities have not reported similar incidents, according to their mayors.
The disappearances are not limited to friendly pets or specific breeds. Shy cats and animals adopted from shelters are also among those missing. Many owners whose cats remain at home are increasingly worried.
Strange Observation Raises Questions
One resident, who lost both of her cats, told Bavarian public broadcaster BR that she strongly believes the animals were taken. She noticed something unusual before the disappearance: one of her cats had rapidly gained weight despite refusing the wet food offered at home.
Kohlberg is a small, rural town. The nearest larger city is Weiden, about 15 kilometers away. Mayor List added that Kohlberg has no busy highways running through it. Whether any of the missing cats wore GPS trackers remains uncertain.
