Munich – As Bayern Munich celebrated another Bundesliga championship on Saturday evening following their win over Borussia Mönchengladbach, the atmosphere was festive — but a quirky detail on the victory podium sparked widespread curiosity. After the official trophy ceremony ended, head coach Vincent Kompany quietly placed a small parrot figurine where the championship shield had been, catching the attention of fans and media alike.
When questioned about the unexpected guest, Kompany remained cryptic. “I’m not telling anyone,” he said in an interview with Sky, adding that the bird held deeper meaning. “The story will come to light,” he hinted, laughing. “We’re bringing it back. It’s probably even more valuable now.”
While Kompany remained tight-lipped, football legend Lothar Matthäus offered some insight. According to him, the figurine was informally adopted by the Bayern squad during a team outing the previous Sunday. Players gathered to watch a key match involving Bayer Leverkusen — Bayern’s main competitor — which ended in a draw, confirming Bayern’s title ahead of time. The parrot, which decorated the restaurant where the players watched the game, was apparently declared the team’s good luck charm on the spot.
Still, confusion lingered within the squad. Midfielder Joshua Kimmich admitted he had no idea where the bird came from. “It definitely wasn’t me,” he told reporters. “But the party on Sunday was wild. I think people can forgive me for not noticing everything that went on.” When informed that assistant coach Aaron Danks had been seen carrying the figurine around, Kimmich laughed. “Yeah, he takes it everywhere. I think that parrot has a few more parties to survive — especially on the city hall balcony next Sunday.”
Other team members were equally uncertain. Substitute goalkeeper Jonas Urbig also denied responsibility, and midfielder João Palhinha jokingly told Bild that Danks had unofficially become the parrot’s “caretaker.” So far, the mystery mascot remains unnamed.
Even Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl was amused when asked about the figure. Though he hinted that he might know more, he playfully refused to elaborate. “I could tell you — but I won’t,” he said with a grin.
As Bayern prepares for their official title celebration at Munich’s town hall, it seems the little parrot has unexpectedly become a symbol of their victorious season — even if no one quite knows why.
