Munich Prepares to Celebrate FC Bayern’s Championship

Munich is holding its breath in anticipation of a grand sporting celebration: this coming Sunday, the Bavarian capital will host thousands of fans eager to personally congratulate FC Bayern Munich on winning their 35th league title.

The central hub of the festivities will traditionally be Marienplatz. Due to the predicted influx of people, city authorities and law enforcement agencies have been placed on high alert. The Munich administration has already published a detailed security plan designed to ensure the comfort and safety of residents and guests on this significant day.

The official part of the celebration will begin on Sunday, May 17, with a preliminary program at 12:30 PM. The climax is scheduled for 1:00 PM, when the bus carrying the champions will arrive at the City Hall (Rathaus). In the Large Assembly Hall, the players and coaching staff will be greeted by Lord Mayor Dominik Krause. Immediately following the official reception, the team will appear on the famous City Hall balcony to present the silver “Meisterschale” to the fans. Those planning to join the festivities must familiarize themselves with the restriction schedule beforehand, as logistics in the city center will be substantially altered.

Championship Celebration in Munich: Closed Zones, Bans, and Control

Participant safety is the priority for municipal services. Mobile barriers have been pre-installed on all approaches to Marienplatz within a radius of up to 300 meters around the City Hall. Police will deploy them in stages based on crowd density: once the number of people on the square reaches a critical limit, access to the cordoned area will be completely blocked. A special security zone has been designated directly in front of the City Hall facade for the work of emergency services and accredited press.

Starting at 11:00 AM, a strict ban on the use of glass containers and any pyrotechnics comes into effect throughout the event area. Authorities also draw attention to the ban on entry for bicycles and electric scooters; vehicles left in unauthorized places will be forcibly towed. Thorough bag checks will be organized at checkpoints. The City Safety Department strongly recommends leaving bulky backpacks and large bags at home to speed up the entry process and avoid creating queues at the entrances.

Restrictions on Public Transport

The transport situation in central Munich will require special attention from passengers. As soon as Marienplatz is full, U3 and U6 subway trains will stop servicing the station. Exits from the underground passage toward Rindermarkt, Fischbrunnen, and Dienerstraße will be closed preventatively; the decision to block the remaining exits will be made dynamically based on the situation. Passengers are advised to use alternative stations such as Odeonsplatz or Sendlinger Tor.

Ground transport will also change its routes. Bus 132 operations will be temporarily restricted: stops at Thal, Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt, and Schrannenhalle are excluded from its schedule. The terminal and starting point for the line during the festivities will be Isartor. Regarding the S-Bahn, due to ongoing technical restrictions on the main line between Isartor and Marienplatz, only lines S2 and S3 will operate. To provide emergency assistance, medical posts will be deployed on Weinstraße, Rosenstraße, at St. Peter’s Church, and by the Old Town Hall tower. Real-time information on transport flows will be published on the city’s official X channel, and visual monitoring is available via webcams on the muenchen.de portal.

Separate Honors for the FC Bayern Women’s Team

This season has been a double triumph for the club: the FC Bayern Women’s team also secured the German championship title early. However, due to a dense sporting calendar, the honoring of the female champions will take place separately. Since the team plays an important away match in Hamburg on May 17, their official reception at the City Hall has been moved to Monday, May 18. Lord Mayor Dominik Krause will personally welcome the women’s squad, emphasizing the equality of their achievements and the importance of women’s football to the city’s sporting glory. Thus, Munich awaits a packed two-day marathon of celebrations dedicated to Bayern’s dominance on the national stage.
