Two-Year-Old Child Falls Into the Isar: Police and Fire Department Conduct Rescue Operation in Isarvorstadt

A Friday morning in Munich's Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district was marred by an emergency that narrowly avoided ending in tragedy.

A two-year-old child, who was near the water, fell into the turbulent channel of the Isar River. Thanks to the prompt and coordinated actions of the city’s emergency services, a tragic outcome was prevented. The rescue operation, which unfolded in a densely populated area, drew the attention of many citizens and required the immediate deployment of significant law enforcement and emergency medical forces.

According to official data from the Munich Police Headquarters, the alarm was received by the duty officer at 09:55 AM. Witnesses reported that a small child was in the water near the Corneliusbrücke bridge. Given the strong current of the Isar in this specific area and the critical age of the victim, the duty officer immediately dispatched several nearby police patrol crews, as well as specialized units of the Munich Professional Fire Department, including a water rescue team.

Child in the Isar: Emergency Services Deployed in the Isarvorstadt District

Every minute counted. The first patrol officers to arrive on the embankment instantly assessed the situation and deployed search operations along the shoreline and downriver. A short time later, officers managed to visually locate the child, who had been carried by the current and washed onto a gravel bank directly beneath the structures of the Corneliusbrücke. The police immediately pulled the victim from the water and handed them over to the arriving medical team.

The child was urgently hospitalized, accompanied by an emergency doctor, in one of the city’s specialized clinics. During the initial examination, doctors diagnosed severe hypothermia caused by the low temperature of the mountain river water. No visible severe injuries or fractures were recorded; however, due to the risks associated with hypothermia, the two-year-old patient’s condition was initially assessed as serious. More than 1,000 personnel from various services, including traffic police, were involved in the rescue operations and cordoning off the area, which temporarily caused major traffic jams in the vicinity of the bridge.

The police are currently conducting a standard investigation into all the circumstances of the incident. According to an official statement from the department, there are absolutely no signs of unlawful actions by third parties. The law enforcement agencies have classified the incident as an accident. Experts once again urge parents to exercise increased vigilance when walking near open bodies of water, especially in the spring period when the water level in the Isar remains high and the current remains treacherous.Source: Munich Police Headquarters
