Munich’s Clothing Donation Bins Overflowing, Council Demands Action

Recycling stations in Munich are often littered and overflowing. The problem is now apparently affecting clothing donation bins as well, prompting politicians to call for a solution.

Munich – Many Munich residents are frustrated with the overflowing and messy recycling stations. “Littering around publicly accessible recycling stations has been a problem for a long time,” says City Council member Hans-Peter Mehling of the Freie Wähler party. Recently, he noted that it’s no longer just glass and plastic containers overflowing, but also clothing donation bins. In a motion, Mehling is calling on Mayor Dieter Reiter to push the Munich waste management company (AWM) for solutions.

Overflowing Clothing Bins in Munich: “Piles of Clothes Ended Up on the Street”

The AWM operates several clothing donation bins, but there are also private providers. In 2023, the city-run company collected 5,282 tons of old clothes. This amounts to about four kilograms of used clothing per person in Munich. Nationwide, according to the Federal Statistical Office, about 175,000 tons of textile and clothing waste were collected, and the trend is increasing.

According to Mehling, the problem that the bins are no longer sufficient became apparent over the summer. “Piles of clothes ended up on the street. The AWM should lead by example and get this problem under control.”

Munich’s Waste Problem: Council Member Demands Spot Checks of Clothing Bins

The motion to city leaders calls on the waste management company to ensure better cleanliness and more frequent emptying of the bins. It also requests that random spot checks of the containers be considered. This could then serve as a model for the private waste disposal companies Remondis and Wittmann, who are responsible for many of the recycling stations in the city.
