“It was a dream start to the Wiesn,” said Munich’s Economic Affairs Officer and Wiesn boss Christian Scharpf to the German Press Agency (DPA). On Saturday afternoon, temperatures exceeded 30 degrees Celsius (86°F), setting a new record for the Wiesn since records began.
Scharpf further explained that the Oktoberfest is presenting itself in its traditional form. However, due to the high temperatures, non-alcoholic drinks were in particularly high demand. Some tent operators even reached their capacity limits with water supplies, and the drinking fountains, where visitors can tap free water, were also heavily used.
According to stallholders, roasted almonds and chocolate-covered fruits were less popular in the summer-like weather. Instead, fast-paced rides that provided a cooling effect were very popular.
Scharpf also praised the medical service: despite the high number of cases, the emergency teams remained calm. The Aicher Ambulance service reported 910 patients on the first day, setting a second record.
In the coming days, it is expected to become significantly cooler in Munich. However, the weather is forecast to be more pleasant again for the second Wiesn weekend, said Scharpf. He advised guests: “You should consider bringing a jacket or a cardigan to be prepared for all temperatures.”
