Update: January 9, 7:15 AM: Overnight into Friday (January 9), snowfall turned into rain. Consequently, the formation of black ice is expected on the frozen ground. The German Meteorological Service has issued an official black ice warning for Munich, valid until 12:00 PM Friday. According to meteorologists, there is still some uncertainty regarding the exact development of the situation.
Additionally, the agency warned of wind gusts reaching speeds of approximately 55 km/h, blowing from the southwest throughout Friday. Due to significant disruptions in rail and road traffic caused by the icy conditions, classes have been canceled at several Bavarian schools. Munich schools, however, remain unaffected.
Original Report from January 8
Munich has experienced weeks of freezing weather, with temperatures dropping to -11°C, occasional light snow, and persistent daytime frosts. However, this calm—albeit harsh—winter period has been interrupted by a storm cyclone named “Elli.” Specialists from the German Meteorological Service explained: “The fringes of a storm cyclone over the Benelux countries are extending into Bavaria. During Friday, milder Atlantic air will begin to arrive from the southwest.”
This shift brings serious consequences: as of 8:00 PM on Thursday (January 8), a severe weather warning is in effect for Munich. In the eastern part of Upper Bavaria, the warning became active as early as 6:00 PM.
Severe Weather Warning Followed by a Return to Deep Winter
The warning covers a territory stretching from the Allgäu in the southwest to Cham in the Upper Palatinate. Meteorologists noted: “In the night into Friday, there will be a transition from snow to rain. Black ice is to be expected on the frozen ground.” They added: “Significant restrictions in train and road traffic are possible.”
In Munich, several centimeters of fresh snow were expected late Thursday evening before changing to rain, which is capable of turning roads into ice rinks. Problems are anticipated across Bavaria, particularly during the Friday morning rush hour. Deutsche Bahn representatives have already stated that disruptions cannot be ruled out, although the company is well-prepared for such conditions. Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution.
Flight delays are also possible at the airport. After a brief period of warming on Friday, all of Bavaria can expect a truly wintry weekend. On Thursday afternoon, a meteorologist from the broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk predicted that Sunday, in particular, will bring severe frosts—down to -15°C toward the Alps—and heavy snowfall, with up to half a meter expected in the Allgäu. Starting Saturday (January 10), snowfall is forecast across the entirety of Bavaria.
