In Munich, on Monday morning (December 29), temperatures reached minus five degrees Celsius. The German Weather Service (DWD) has prepared a forecast for the upcoming freezing days. Snow is also expected in Munich by the year’s end. Preliminary forecasts for the start of the new year show just how severe these winter days could become.
Winter in Full Force: Severe Frost and Snow Expected in Munich
Those traveling by car in Munich on Monday will likely need to clear frost from their windshields. According to the DWD, temperatures will remain below freezing throughout the day, with a maximum high of minus one degree Celsius. Overcast skies will persist. An official frost warning was in effect until 11:00 AM.
In the early hours of Tuesday (December 30), snowfall will begin across most of Bavaria, with the exception of Lower Franconia and the Allgäu region. By Tuesday morning, snow is expected to reach Munich. According to meteorological data, approximately one centimeter of fresh snow will fall. Daytime temperatures will hover around zero degrees.
The night leading into Wednesday (December 31) will be exceptionally cold in Munich, with double-digit sub-zero temperatures possible. The day before the holiday will begin at minus nine degrees Celsius. Intermittent precipitation is possible in Munich right up until New Year’s Eve.
Sharp Weather Decline in the New Year: Forecasts Point to Heavy Snow
The start of the new year in Munich will remain wintery and cold. For January 1, meteorologists predict temperatures in the Bavarian capital ranging from minus three to plus three degrees Celsius. From January 2, road conditions may become difficult as snowfall is expected to intensify. The weather service anticipates that between Saturday (January 3) and Sunday (January 4), snow accumulation in Munich could reach twelve centimeters.
According to the European weather model (ECMWF), winter conditions at the start of the year could be even more severe. This model predicts over 25 centimeters of fresh snow in Munich and the surrounding areas by Sunday afternoon. Other parts of Bavaria are also expected to be blanketed in snow, with the Alps potentially seeing more than 30 centimeters of new precipitation.
