Munich Subway Trains Temporarily Change Schedule Due to Track Maintenance

For several nights, U2 line trains will operate only every 20 minutes. To repair cracks and prevent rail breakages, a specialized train will perform surface milling on the tracks.

Passengers should prepare for service restrictions on the Munich subway system in the coming days. As announced by Stadtwerke München (SWM) on Thursday, U2 line trains will run at 20-minute intervals during evening and night hours from Sunday (January 18) to Friday (January 23). These restrictions will only affect the section between Feldmoching and Scheidplatz stations.

The cause is track maintenance between the Hasenbergl and Milbertshofen stops. Work will be carried out daily from 10:30 PM until the end of service. On the section between Scheidplatz and Messestadt Ost, the U2 line will continue to operate normally with ten-minute intervals. Those planning to transfer at Scheidplatz will need to move to a different platform via the mezzanine level, SWM added.

Restrictions Planned for Other Lines

A specialized milling train will be deployed for the technical work to remove the top layer of metal from the rails. This is necessary because contact between train wheels and the tracks creates micro-cracks on the metal surface. If these are not eliminated in a timely manner, they grow over time and can lead to a rail fracture. This treatment extends the service life of the tracks and enhances transit safety.

Municipal utilities explained that in the coming weeks, the milling train will also be used on the U2 line section between Hohenzollernstraße and Königsplatz. Additionally, track work is planned for the U3 line and the southern branch of the U6 line.
