FC Bayern Considers Buying Stadium in Unterhaching for Women’s Team

According to media reports, FC Bayern is planning to purchase a third stadium.

In addition to the Allianz Arena and the Bayern Campus, the record champion is said to be interested in the Sportpark Unterhaching.

A New Home for the FC Bayern Women

This would be a solution that could help many parties. On one hand, the municipality of Unterhaching would be rid of its stadium, the home of SpVgg Unterhaching, and the associated maintenance costs for the Sportpark. On the other hand, the FC Bayern women’s team would finally have a permanent home, offering the double-winners a venue with a suitable spectator capacity.

The stadium at the Bayern Campus in northern Munich is only licensed for 2,500 fans and can no longer meet the growing demands of the Bundesliga leaders. For top matches in the Champions League, such as the upcoming game against Arsenal FC on November 12, the Munich women have to move to the Allianz Arena. Furthermore, matches cannot be played at the Campus from the quarter-finals onwards in the premier competition.

Negotiations Reportedly Already Underway

However, since the Allianz Arena, with a capacity of 75,000 spectators, is still far too large, the Sportpark with a maximum capacity of 15,000 seats would be a good alternative. According to media reports, FC Bayern is already in negotiations to acquire the stadium, with a price of around €7.5 million being discussed. However, there are still issues to be clarified regarding necessary renovation measures and the structural integrity of the stands.

This solution could also appeal to the financially struggling SpVgg Unterhaching. The club and its president, Manfred Schwabl—a former FC Bayern player himself—have a good relationship with the record champions and already cooperate closely in youth development as a so-called regional partner club. SpVgg could then rent the stadium from Bayern for its matches in the Regionalliga.
