Two Indoor Pools in Munich will Close this Coming Monday

Munich residents accustomed to regular water procedures will have to adjust their schedules at the end of this April.

City services have announced a temporary suspension of operations for two large municipal facilities at once. These are the “Michaelibad” pool in the Neuperlach district and “Westbad” in Pasing. Despite the fact that both complexes are closing at the same time — this coming Monday, April 27 — the nature and duration of the work at these sites differ significantly.

These measures are part of a planned strategy to maintain city infrastructure. According to statements from local authorities, timely maintenance allows for the avoidance of emergency situations in the future and guarantees compliance with the strict hygiene standards adopted in Germany.

Maintenance at “Michaelibad”

The indoor pool in Neuperlach will close for a relatively short period. This complex is rightfully considered one of the most versatile in the city: it attracts families with children, professional swimmers, and sauna lovers. On the facility’s territory, there is not only a standard 25-meter pool but also a specialized pool for swimming lessons, as well as many other water attractions.

The reason for the closure is the annual maintenance activities. Representatives of the Munich Public Utilities (SWM) emphasize that regular cleaning and technical inspections are necessary to maintain a high standard of service.

“To guarantee our guests the opportunity to continue using modern and well-maintained pools, cleaning and maintenance work is carried out regularly,” reported an official statement from SWM. According to preliminary calculations, the complex will resume admitting visitors as early as Tuesday, May 12. By this time, the hydromassage systems, the outdoor heated pool, and the jacuzzi will be fully inspected.

Large-scale Reconstruction of “Westbad”

The situation with “Westbad” in Pasing looks different and will require much more patience from citizens. Unlike Michaelibad, this complex will undergo extensive technical modernization. The main task will be the complete replacement of the filtration plant and bringing it into compliance with modern environmental and technical standards. The scale of the work is so large that the reopening of the indoor section is planned only for the autumn of 2026.

Nevertheless, there is positive news for outdoor recreation enthusiasts.

The summer season for the “Westbad” outdoor zone will begin without delays. According to the approved schedule, the outdoor water park will open on May 14, which will allow residents of the district to use the complex’s services during the warm season, despite the construction work inside the main building.

Conclusions

And while the utilities begin implementing the set plans, Munich residents are advised to study the occupancy of alternative sites in advance. The closure of two popular facilities at once, one of which will be out of commission for more than six months, will inevitably increase the load on other city pools.

In the long term, these inconveniences are justified: the modernization of “Westbad,” costing several million euros, will ensure the safety and comfort of visits for decades to come, while the short-term repairs at “Michaelibad” will allow it to maintain its impeccable reputation in the current season.
