Munich Braces for Three-Day Public Sector and Transport Strikes

The upcoming week will begin with three days of public sector strikes for Munich residents, with protests set to impact hospitals as well as bus and train services.

Munich — The Verdi union has called for a “final wave of pressure before the concluding round of negotiations,” as described by Verdi’s deputy chairwoman, Christine Behle. For Munich, this marks the start of significant industrial action across the public sector.

Specifically, on Monday and Tuesday, protests will impact university hospitals, namely the Rechts der Isar hospital and the Grosshadern clinic. Only emergency services will be maintained at these institutions during this time. Additionally, on Tuesday, employees at higher education institutions—including LMU, TUM, Munich University of Applied Sciences, HFF, and Weihenstephan—along with the student union, will join the strike.

Buses and Trains: Major Disruptions Expected Wednesday

The strike is set to become even more disruptive as it once again targets public transportation on Wednesday.

Following a previous strike day last week, MVG (Munich Transport Corporation) expects service on Munich’s subway (U-Bahn), trams, and buses to be significantly reduced this Wednesday. Football fans, in particular, must plan their travel carefully, as FC Bayern Munich is scheduled to face RB Leipzig in a cup match at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening. Typically, the vast majority of fans rely on the subway to reach the stadium.

The cause of the industrial action remains the ongoing disagreement between the negotiating parties. “Employers were counting on a five percent wage increase,” Behle noted. However, Verdi and the Civil Service Federation (Dbb) are demanding a seven percent pay rise.
