Erding — The Erding district administration will close nine refugee shelters within the city during 2026, forcing 72 people to relocate. As reported by Merkur correspondent Dieter Priglmeir, District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer announced these plans during an annual press conference in Wartenberg.
The closures are a direct result of ending lease contracts. The 72 residents are expected to move—primarily to municipalities with lower occupancy rates. Eight of the affected apartments house children, who, according to officials, should remain in Erding whenever possible to minimize disruption.
Lease Expirations: Erding’s Quota Stands at 245 Percent
The nine shelters, located in apartments as well as private and multi-family houses, are scheduled for phased closure between March and December 2026. Matthias Huber, head of real estate management at the district administration, explained: “The lease terms are expiring, and we will not be renewing them. We are returning these properties so they are once again available on the regular housing market.” In total, 72 spots will be cut.
The objective is to reduce existing overcapacity while ensuring socially acceptable living conditions. Residents will be transferred primarily to shelters in nearby communities that currently have lower occupancy levels. Huber emphasized that Erding carries a disproportionate share compared to other municipalities, with a current fulfillment quota of 245 percent. Across the entire district, the average quota fulfillment stands at 104 percent.
Families with Children to Remain in Erding
At the same time, Huber clarified that alternative options within the city should be offered to those affected by the lease terminations in Erding. He noted, “Children live in eight of these apartments.” Due to school or kindergarten attendance and established social ties, he stated it is necessary to provide relocation options within Erding—specifically to shelters on Dr.-Henkel-Straße or Marie-Curie-Straße.
The district administration also intends to review other municipalities with high occupancy rates to see where further relief is possible. The goal is to organize accommodation in a way that is balanced, efficient, and acceptable for all stakeholders across the entire district.
