Up to 100,000 Protesters Expected in Munich to Demonstrate Against Iranian Regime During Security Conference

Munich — Representatives of the Iranian opposition are organizing large-scale protests against the leadership in Tehran to coincide with the Munich Security Conference. Reza Pahlavi, the son of the ousted Shah, has called for participation in the demonstrations.

A major demonstration against the Iranian leadership is taking shape in Munich. During the Munich Security Conference in February, opposition representatives plan to bring up to 100,000 people to the streets.

Demonstration for Human Rights in Iran During the Security Conference

The association “The Munich Circle” has scheduled a rally for February 14, with an estimated attendance of up to 100,000 people, according to the Munich District Administration (KVR) in response to an inquiry from the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa). The event is set to take place from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM under the title: “Human Rights and Freedom in Iran: International Solidarity with the Iranian People.”

Whether 100,000 participants will actually arrive remained initially unclear. According to a departmental spokesperson, potential conditions that the organizers must meet were still under review. A police spokesperson explained that officers will provide security for the assembly as part of their duties during the conference. Law enforcement forces have prepared for any number of participants, regardless of how many people ultimately answer the call.

Organizers Expect Participants from Across Europe

The organizers themselves expressed confidence in the success of the event. In their announcement, representatives of the association wrote that they anticipate unusually broad participation from activists across Germany and all of Europe. The demonstration is intended to serve as a call to action for the international community, help create political pressure, and show the people in Iran that they are not alone.

Reza Pahlavi, the son of the Shah ousted in 1979, also called for participation via social media, as reported by dpa. He designated February 14 as a global day of action against the Iranian leadership. Munich, Los Angeles, and Toronto have emerged as the primary gathering points for the protest actions.

Opposition Leader Demands Release of Political Prisoners

Among the demands for the demonstration, Pahlavi cited the release of all political prisoners in Iran. Furthermore, he explained that preparations for the recognition of a transitional government, which should lead the country toward democracy, must be accelerated. Whether Pahlavi will personally attend the rally in Munich remained unknown at this time.Source: dpa
