Tram Disruptions in Munich This Summer as Major Track Works Begin Across City

Жителям и гостям Мюнхена предстоит столкнуться с серьёзными перебоями в работе трамвайного сообщения с 2 июня до конца августа из-за масштабной модернизации инфраструктуры.

The work will impact several major tram lines, including 16, 17, 19, 21, 27, and 28, as well as night lines N19 and N27.

The disruptions are due to track renewals at Karlsplatz (Stachus), infrastructure work at Maxmonument—including new district heating pipes—and the integration of a rail junction for the upcoming Tram West Tangent project in the Laim district. The Munich Transport Corporation (MVG) will implement reroutes and deploy replacement buses during this period.

Overview of Affected Tram Lines and Temporary Measures

  • Line 16 will operate only between Romanplatz and Sendlinger Tor. Between Sendlinger Tor and Isartor, service will be covered by Line 17, while the stretch from Isartor to Effnerplatz will be served by replacement buses.
  • Line 19 and Night Tram N19 will run solely between Berg am Laim and Lautensackstraße. Additional replacement buses will serve the route from Westendstraße via Fürstenriederstraße and Willibaldplatz to Pasing. There will also be a detour between Hauptbahnhof Süd and Max-Weber-Platz via Stachus, Sendlinger Tor, and Isartor. Stops at Lenbachplatz, Marienplatz (Theatinerstraße), and Maximilianeum will be suspended.
  • Line 21 will follow the same rerouted path as Line 19 and will bypass the section between Lenbachplatz and Maximilianeum.
  • Line 27 will be shortened to run between Petuelring and Scheidplatz via Hohenzollernplatz and Kurfürstenplatz. It will replace Line 28, which will not operate during the construction. Replacement buses will cover Karlsplatz (Stachus) to Kurfürstenplatz.
  • Night Tram N27 will operate between Großhesseloher Brücke and Karlsplatz (Stachus) but will be rerouted via Hauptbahnhof, Stiglmaierplatz, and Hochschule München. Bus shuttles will cover the section from Karlsplatz to Petuelring.

Track and Infrastructure Projects at Key Locations

At Karlsplatz (Stachus), renovation work has been ongoing since early this year at the U-Bahn station. Starting June 2, major construction will extend to the tram tracks above, affecting Lines 19, 21, 27, and 28. The restoration of the road surface is scheduled for September after the project wraps up.

At Maxmonument and along Maximilianstraße, the city’s public utility company, SWM, will replace tracks and switches while also modernizing the overhead line systems for Line 19 and installing new district heating infrastructure. Although Maximilianstraße will remain open to traffic, Thierschstraße will be closed at the Maxmonument, with footpaths remaining accessible and residential access maintained.

Tram West Tangent Connection Begins in Laim

To integrate the upcoming Tram West Tangent into the current network, a new track junction is being installed at the intersection of Agnes-Bernauer-Straße and Fürstenrieder Straße. Preliminary work, including the relocation of utility lines, will begin in June. Simultaneously, track renewal will occur at the Friedenheimer Straße crossing.

As part of these efforts, Agnes-Bernauer-Straße will become a one-way street from Ossietzkystraße towards the city center. Left and right turns from Fürstenrieder Straße into Agnes-Bernauer-Straße will be prohibited during the construction period.

Conclusion: Replacement Services Aim to Minimize Inconvenience

The MVG has called on passengers to show patience during the nearly three-month construction period, which is essential for the long-term improvement of the tram network. Replacement buses and alternative routes are in place to maintain urban mobility, but travelers are strongly encouraged to check schedules in advance and allow extra travel time.
