This further expands the video surveillance network in the southern station district. The new units complement existing towers at Stachus and the Old Botanical Garden.
According to Police Chief Thomas Hampel, the area is currently considered a crime hotspot – particularly for offenses involving bodily injury and drugs. “Besides objective safety, the subjective sense of security among citizens also suffers,” Hampel stated. The new towers are intended to help solve and prosecute crimes more quickly.
Economic Affairs Representative and Mayoral Candidate Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU) also commented in a statement: “I am confident this measure will help make the area around Schillerstraße a place where Munich residents enjoy spending time again, as both security and the feeling of safety increase.” Baumgärtner noted he had already called for video surveillance back in July.
State-of-the-Art Technology for Enhanced Security
The towers are equipped with remotely operated cameras featuring directional and zoom functions, as well as a 360-degree panoramic view. Their data is transmitted encrypted to the operations center. They can be flexibly relocated and deployed elsewhere as needed.
According to police, video surveillance is just one component of a broader package of measures to improve the security situation. Further steps include increased police patrols, better lighting and cleanliness, and closer cooperation with local residents and businesses.
Cooperation within the Task Force
These measures are being implemented as part of the “Taskforce Bahnhofsviertel” – an alliance of police, the district administration office, and other municipal authorities. The goal is to improve the situation in the district in the long term and strengthen the public’s sense of security.
