Outdoor Pools Across Bavaria See Surge in Visitors as Summer Season Begins

The start of summer in Bavaria has brought a wave of visitors to the region’s outdoor swimming pools, with large crowds recorded on the opening day of the season. In Munich, the Schyrenbad saw a particularly high turnout as locals rushed to enjoy the sunshine.

Under clear blue skies and warm weather, the 2025 outdoor pool season officially opened across parts of Bavaria. In the state capital, municipal authorities reported 1,360 guests at the historic Schyrenbad within the first few hours of operation. Located near the Isar River, the pool has long been one of Munich’s most popular summer destinations.

Other cities also began welcoming swimmers. In Nuremberg, the Westbad kicked off its season, while Erlangen opened the Röthelheimbad to its first visitors. Although temperatures in many regions remained relatively cool, outdoor pools in several towns and communities across the state received their first guests of the year. Most public swimming facilities are expected to reopen for the season over the coming weeks.

Even before the official openings, early-season swimmers had already been spotted in Bavaria’s lakes. Despite chilly water temperatures, many appeared undeterred by the cold.

According to the German Weather Service, May 1 saw early-summer highs in several areas, with temperatures reaching up to 29 degrees Celsius in parts of Lower Main. Warm weather was expected to continue into Friday. However, forecasters predicted the arrival of showers and thunderstorms by Saturday, likely bringing the brief spell of summer-like conditions to a pause.
