Munich City Services Clear 41 Tons of Waste Following New Year’s Celebrations

A total of 185 employees took part in the citywide cleanup following New Year's Eve. Parks and green spaces were particularly affected by the litter. Cleanup operations began as early as midnight.

Munich — New Year’s Eve celebrations, accompanied by fireworks and firecrackers, once again presented the Building Department with a massive task. In total, the street cleaning service removed approximately 41 tons of New Year’s waste. In the previous year, this figure stood at roughly 49 tons. Notably, a special festive zone was organized on Ludwigstraße for the first time this year.

185 Building Department Staff Deployed, Some Starting at 12:30 AM

The operation involved 185 employees utilizing street sweepers, dump trucks, multi-purpose vehicles, and compact tractors. While cleanup in the city center and the Schwabing district took place from 4:00 AM to noon, staff from the municipal street cleaning service were already active at the Friedensengel as of 12:30 AM. This early start was necessary to ensure that vehicular traffic could resume without obstruction by 3:00 AM. From 6:00 AM, cleaning efforts were expanded to the adjacent road network within the full-service zone (the Middle Ring and the central part of the Pasing district).

The Horticultural Division of the Building Department also began clearing public parks and squares on the first day of the new year. According to city authorities, particularly high volumes of waste were recorded in Luitpoldpark, Olympiaberg, Neuhofener Berg, Riemer Park, Königsplatz, Theresienhöhe, the area around Reichenbachbrücke, as well as Hirschgarten, Arnulfpark, and the Ostpark and Westpark.

City Gardeners Tasked with Clearing 2,400 Hectares of Land

Gardeners, supported by third-party contractors, are working intensively to restore all 1,300 green spaces—covering a total area of over 2,400 hectares—to a clean state as quickly as possible. Priority is given to ensuring the safety of footpaths and removing broken glass, followed by the cleaning of remaining areas. On lawns, flowerbeds, and between shrubs, litter must be collected manually.
