Munich Authorities Set Pyrotechnics Rules for New Year’s Eve 2025

In Munich, launching firecrackers is not permitted everywhere on New Year’s Eve. The city administration has designated several restricted zones, which for the first time include the area surrounding the Hellabrunn Zoo. Fines will be imposed for violations of these rules.

Munich — While New Year’s Eve can be celebrated throughout Munich, the launching of fireworks is prohibited in certain parts of the city. As is the case every year, authorities have developed a set of rules for the use of pyrotechnics. A new addition this year is the fireworks ban near the Hellabrunn Zoo. Those who do not comply with the established restrictions face a monetary fine. The Munich administration stated that the police will monitor compliance and penalize violations.

Ban on Fireworks and Firecrackers in Munich on New Year’s Eve

In the pedestrian zone, Marienplatz, and Viktualienmarkt, the launching of any fireworks is prohibited from 9:00 PM on December 31 until 2:00 AM on January 1. Exceptions are made for sparklers and small table crackers. The ban applies to the following areas:

  • Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt: The area of the square up to building No. 15 inclusive (east side) and Viktualienmarkt, building No. 2, within the boundaries of adjacent buildings.
  • Rindermarkt: From Marienplatz to building No. 5 on Rindermarkt.
  • Rosenstrasse: Up to the corner of Fürstenfelder-Strasse and Rindermarkt.
  • Kaufingerstrasse and Neuhauser-Strasse: Up to and including Karlsplatz (Stachus).
  • Karlsplatz (Stachus): The western part up to and including the Sonnenstrasse sidewalk.
  • Weinstrasse and Dienerstrasse: Designated sections within the boundaries of adjacent buildings and connecting cul-de-sac streets.

Furthermore, within the Mittlerer Ring (Middle Ring road), a ban on pure noisemakers (firecrackers and bangers) is in effect for the duration of December 31 and January 1. However, the use of visual fireworks, such as rockets, battery displays, and fountains, remains permitted in this zone.

First-Ever Fireworks Ban Around Hellabrunn Zoo

To protect the animals, a ban on pyrotechnics in the immediate vicinity of the Hellabrunn Zoo has been implemented for the first time this year. The restriction is in effect for the full 24 hours of December 31 and January 1. The zone covers the zoo territory and a protective perimeter:

  • North: Along the line between Bremstrasse and the Isar canal, including specific residential buildings on Bremstrasse and Schönstrasse.
  • East: Along the edge of the residential development to Lindenstrasse and Willroiderstrasse.
  • South: The intersection of Willroiderstrasse and Füllstrasse.
  • West: Limited by the Isar bypass canal.

The Bavarian Administration of State Palaces has also requested that citizens refrain from using pyrotechnics in the English Garden, particularly near the Chinese Tower and the Japanese Teahouse, due to fire risks. The courtyards of the Residenz and the Nymphenburg Palace Park will be closed to the public on New Year’s Eve.Source: Munich City Administration data
