Munich Water Management Office warned of flood threat due to rising water levels in the Isar

Thaw in the Alps and prolonged rains are contributing to the rise of the water level in the Isar. The first alert mark may be exceeded as early as Tuesday afternoon.

Munich — snowmelt and heavy precipitation are bringing consequences: the water level in the Isar is rising. The Munich Water Management Office on Tuesday morning (February 24) distributed a warning for the city and district of Munich: the exceeding of the first alert level is expected in the afternoon.

Isar level is rising: Munich office warned of flood threat

In the Alps, due to snowmelt combined with rain, a significant influx of water should be expected, it was noted in the Katwarn application notification on Tuesday morning. In the foothills of the Alps, soils are oversaturated with moisture after last weekend — the risk of flooding has grown. According to the forecast, precipitation will weaken during the day; however, in the Alps, this will happen only next night.

The Flood Warning Service reported for the city and district of Munich that at the Munich/Isar measuring station, the first alert mark will likely be briefly exceeded in the afternoon. The first level corresponds to a mark of more than 2.40 meters, the second level is reached at 3 meters. The warning is valid tentatively until 10:00 AM on Wednesday, February 25.

It is not only the level of the Isar that has risen: in other regions of the federal state, the threat of flood has also increased due to the thaw and precipitation. Thus, according to information from the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, on the section from Cham to Nittenau in the Upper Palatinate, a probability of reaching the third level out of four again arose on Tuesday. With the strengthening of rains in Southern Bavaria, individual tributaries of the Danube may overflow their banks, in particular in Donauwörth. By the end of the week, the danger of flooding will presumably decrease.
