Following the deaths of two children from Hamburg during a vacation in Istanbul, their mother has also passed away, as reported by the DHA news agency. The father remains hospitalized. The investigation into the cause of the illnesses and deaths is ongoing. The suspected cause is believed to be food poisoning.
Turkish authorities are inspecting an establishment in the Beşiktaş district. “The establishment, which is suspected to be the source of the incident, has been sealed indefinitely by the relevant units of our municipality to protect public health and safety,” the Cumhuriyet newspaper quoted the Beşiktaş district administration as saying. The investigation into the incident continues.
According to the Anadolu Agency, it is known that the family consumed stuffed mussels on Tuesday. Other media outlets, citing the investigation, reported that the family also ate stuffed baked potatoes (kumpir) in the Ortaköy district.

As confirmed by the German Foreign Office, the deceased are German citizens. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday (November 11). The children, aged three and six, did not survive despite all medical efforts at the hospital. Their parents remained in intensive care, fighting for their lives.
Children Suspected to Have Died from Food Poisoning
According to the Turkish television channel NTV, the family, of Turkish origin, had traveled from Hamburg and were on vacation in Turkey. Other media reported that the family was visiting Istanbul and staying at a hotel in the old city. According to Istanbul Deputy Director of Health Abdullah Emre Güner, the children were brought to the hospital on Tuesday with severe poisoning symptoms. The parents also required medical attention.
Based on the investigation, the family had arrived in the country on Sunday (November 9). On Monday, they reportedly consumed mussels from both a street vendor and a restaurant. The following day, all family members exhibited symptoms such as vomiting and nausea, leading to their hospitalization, where they received treatment and were discharged. Later, emergency services were called when the mother and daughter were found unconscious at the hotel.
The Consulate General in Istanbul is providing consular support to the affected family, as further stated by the Foreign Office. Competent authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the suspected food poisoning.
