The appearance of a young man openly brandishing a weapon in front of passengers led to the mobilization of significant law enforcement forces: ten patrol crews were deployed to the Königsplatz station in the shortest possible time.
During further proceedings, law enforcement agencies obtained additional information that completed the picture of the incident and shed light on the identity of the detainee.
Munich police reconstructed the events of Tuesday, 7 April, in detail and provided all the specifics in their morning press release. According to the case materials, the 18-year-old youth provoked panic among passengers by performing certain actions with a blank-firing pistol directly inside the train carriage. The initial arrest at Königsplatz station became merely the starting point for a larger investigation that went far beyond the violation of the Weapons Act.
Suspected Drug Trafficking: Police Search Detainee’s Apartment
During the initial search of the detainee’s personal belongings, police officers discovered not only the weapon but also a set of suspicious substances. The young man was in possession of various narcotics and medicinal products, along with related items, the combination of which allowed investigators to put forward a version of the detainee’s possible involvement in the distribution of prohibited substances. The operational information was transferred to the prosecutor’s office, which urgently coordinated the acquisition of a judicial search warrant for the suspect’s home.
Investigative actions continued at the apartment of the 18-year-old Dachau resident. During the search, law enforcement officers found and seized several knives. However, according to the official report, no new evidence falling under the Narcotics Act was found directly at the place of residence.
Nevertheless, based on the findings made during the personal search in the subway, a protocol was filed against the youth on charges of illegal drug trafficking. Despite the seriousness of the suspicions, after the completion of all necessary procedural measures and consultation with the prosecutor on duty, the detainee was released pending trial.
“It Was Like a Movie”: Passenger Disarms Offender with Military Support
Current investigative data allows for a detailed reconstruction of the chronology of events in the U2 line train carriage. The youth from Dachau was in the subway during the daytime, carrying a blank-firing pistol in his backpack. Having taken a seat, he placed the bag in front of him and began manipulating the weapon, which those around him perceived as a direct and imminent threat.
The situation was resolved by the decisiveness of a 24-year-old passenger who reacted without delay. The man tackled the offender to the floor and held him in a fixed position until police officers arrived. In subsequent interviews, the eyewitness noted that during the moments of the struggle, what was happening seemed surreal and reminded him of a scene from a movie. A Bundeswehr soldier nearby in the carriage joined in neutralizing the threat. The serviceman, who was in uniform on duty, helped to finally disarm the young man by taking the pistol away from him.
By the time the suspect exited the train onto the platform, the first patrols were already waiting for him. Police representatives emphasized that upon seeing the armed officers, the 18-year-old youth showed discretion: he raised his hands and the weapon upward, signaling an end to resistance and handing the situation over to the control of the law enforcement authorities. No citizens were injured as a result of the incident. Currently, the investigative group is conducting an inquiry into the facts of threats and gross violation of the Weapons Act—carrying even a blank-firing pistol in public places requires a special permit, which the detainee did not possess.
