Thanks to the exceptional bravery and instantaneous reaction of a 24-year-old Berlin resident, an armed assailant was neutralized before he could open fire. The police operation at Königsplatz station concluded with the suspect’s arrest, yet the details of the event continue to shock the public with their suddenness and audacity.
Munich — The scene that played out shortly after 2:00 PM resembled a sequence from an action thriller, but for eyewitnesses, it was a harsh reality. The central figure of the events, a 24-year-old Berliner, could hardly hold back tears some time after the incident while standing on the Königsplatz platform in the arms of his partner.
A split-second impulse and the realization of imminent danger forced him into a struggle with a person who had been sitting directly opposite them in the half-empty subway car and suddenly began pulling a pistol from a backpack.
“In That Moment, I Lunged at Him”
According to the eyewitness, the conflict brewed in silence. The young man sitting across from the couple had been acting strangely for a long time: he stared intently and provocatively at his fellow passengers, creating an atmosphere of nervous tension. The situation reached its climax when passengers noticed the youth was not just holding a weapon but demonstratively preparing it for use. “We saw him load the pistol and start pulling it out of the backpack. It was absolutely surreal, like a movie,” the Berliner shared. At that moment, only one thought flashed through his mind: the attacker was going to shoot them right there in the moving train.
The man’s reaction was instinctive and decisive. Without waiting for the barrel to be pointed in his direction, the 24-year-old passenger lunged. He managed to intercept the attacker’s hands and wrest the weapon away. While restraining the youth and preventing any resistance, the witness began calling loudly for help, alerting other passengers to the danger: “I was shouting at the top of my lungs: ‘He has a gun!'” A Bundeswehr soldier in the same carriage responded instantly. The serviceman intervened promptly and fully disarmed the 18-year-old offender, maintaining control of the situation until the train came to a complete stop.
Motives of the 18-Year-Old with a Pistol Under Investigation
Upon arrival at Königsplatz station, police launched a large-scale operation. Approximately 20 law enforcement officers were involved in the arrest and cordoning off the scene. A departmental spokesperson officially confirmed the witness’s heroic intervention, noting that the 24-year-old man’s brave actions prevented the perpetrator from fully utilizing the firearm in the confined space of the carriage.
The identity of the detainee has been established: he is an 18-year-old German citizen residing in the Dachau district. During the search, police seized the weapon and a loaded magazine. According to preliminary forensic results, the item is classified as a blank-firing acoustic weapon (a so-called “starter pistol”). Although such weapons are not designed to fire live ammunition, they are virtually indistinguishable from real firearms in appearance, and their use in public places for threats poses a significant public danger. Fortunately, no one in the subway suffered physical injuries, though many required psychological support.
An official investigation has already been launched against the youth from Dachau. He is charged with threatening lives and health, as well as a gross violation of the Weapons Act. It was revealed that the young man did not possess the necessary permit to carry even a blank-firing pistol in public places. Investigators are now attempting to reconstruct the chain of events to understand the true motive: whether it was a planned attack, a result of psychological instability, or a tragic attempt at self-assertion through intimidation.
