Bavarian car dealer sentenced to six years for illegal luxury car supplies to Russia

A high-profile judicial proceeding in Bavaria has concluded with a severe and resonance-filled sentence for an entrepreneur who turned his private business into a secret and highly specialized supply channel for providing various Russian state structures with elite transport.

The Würzburg District Court officially sentenced the car dealer to six years of imprisonment for the organization of large-scale and systematic illegal supplies of armored executive-class automobiles to Russia in direct circumvention of the strict European Union sanctions. According to the investigation’s comprehensive data, the total value of the dispatched cars is calculated in tens of millions of euros, and the final owners of these “fortresses on wheels” became various state departments and the Federal Security Service (FSB).

The judicial chamber found the 49-year-old man guilty of systematic and commercial violation of the special embargo decree. As reported by the Essen Customs Investigation Office, whose employees gathered the extensive evidence base piece by piece over many months, the defendant consciously and methodically constructed a criminal business model. His 41-year-old female accomplice received a sentence of two years of imprisonment, which was suspended with a probation period of three years. In addition to the long prison terms, the court ruled to confiscate a truly colossal sum — approximately 18.6 million euros obtained as illegal profit. It is worth noting that the sentence, passed after a formal agreement between the parties based on full and detailed confessional testimony, has not yet entered into legal force.

Investigation of shadow export schemes for executive-class automobiles

Customs service employees and the Würzburg Prosecutor’s Office conducted painstaking and meticulous work regarding a resident of the Miltenberg district since May 2024. The main point of the serious accusation was the professional and calculated evasion of compliance with the sanctions regime, which directly and explicitly prohibits the sale of certain categories of goods to Russia.

The investigation reconstructed a detailed and step-by-step picture of what was happening: through the various structures of the enterprising dealer, eleven luxury automobiles for a total sum of almost 20 million euros were illegally transferred to Russia. The business of the accused originally had a very narrow and specific specialization — he dealt with armored models of one of the most eminent and famous German automakers. Since the entrepreneur lost the legal right to purchase new cars directly from the factory after the start of hostilities in Ukraine, he showed considerable ingenuity and created an extensive and multi-layered supply network. For this purpose, numerous front companies and intermediaries were used, which masked the true purchaser and the final destination of the expensive equipment.

Particular popularity of German armored vehicles among Russian special services

After the introduction of European restrictions on the export of various luxury items, the defendant, according to information from the customs department, very quickly occupied the vacant niche and became a key supplier for two of the largest Russian dealers in the luxury segment. In recent years, his company’s activity was almost entirely and exclusively focused on bypassing the anti-Russian embargo, which brought significant super-profits. During the investigation, it was revealed that many of these armored limousines and powerful SUVs found their place in the official motor pools of Russian departments, including the presidential administration and FSB units.

Export restrictions are a fundamental and critical tool of the EU sanctions policy aimed at containing the economy of the aggressor country. European companies are obliged to strictly and unconditionally observe the ban on the sale of high-tech and expensive products. Thanks to the timely and professional intervention of law enforcement agencies, a truly grand and unprecedented deal was successfully thwarted: the police prevented the planned supplies of another 400 new automobiles, the market value of which approaches 40 million euros.

Remorse and admission of guilt by the defendants

Finding themselves faced with irrefutable and overwhelming facts gathered by the investigation, both accused persons fully admitted their guilt even before the start of the main pleadings. The prosecution, in its closing statement, insisted on six and a half years of prison for the organizer of the scheme and the confiscation of more than 18.5 million euros in criminal income. Defense lawyers, in turn, asked for leniency, proposing five and a half years for the main figure and a suspended term for his assistant.

This process clearly and vividly demonstrates that the German law enforcement system has seriously and thoroughly taken on embargo violators. The case in Würzburg is far from the only one of its kind. Even at the end of 2025, it became known that the Munich Prosecutor’s Office initiated checks regarding a whole range of trading platforms that are suspected of similar machinations. About 50 luxury foreign cars worth over ten million euros, also successfully transferred across the border, appeared in those materials.Source: AFP and dpa
