Munich Utility Company Adjusts Electricity Tariff for SWM Customers Starting in 2026

Due to changed costs, the Munich City Utility Company (SWM), following natural gas prices, will also adjust its electricity tariffs starting February 1, 2026.

Munich. Let’s start with the good news: according to the utility company’s announcement, the tariff adjustment means reduced costs for the majority of consumers. However, precisely for whom and by how much, as is often the case, depends on consumption volume.

SWM Adjusts Tariffs by February 2026: Usage Price Down, Basic Price Up

SWM will significantly lower the usage price for electricity—the price per consumed kilowatt-hour—starting February 1, 2026, according to the company. This was made possible by reduced procurement costs, as well as lower consumption-dependent network fees, despite rising state levies and surcharges.

Conversely, the fixed annual basic price for electricity will increase because various tariff components—such as basic-price-based network fees—are rising. Nevertheless, SWM announced that the majority of customers will still benefit from the overall tariff reduction.

Dieter Reiter (SPD), Mayor of the city and Chairman of the SWM Supervisory Board, called this “good news right before Christmas” for the citizens. SWM had recently announced that natural gas prices would decrease for most of its customers in the new year.

“They have now followed suit with electricity tariffs and provided additional relief for many private households. SWM was and remains a reliable and strong energy partner for our city,” Reiter noted.

SWM will inform all electricity consumers in writing and individually about the new tariffs. More information on this topic is also available on the website

Household Example

SWM performed a calculation: a typical Munich household (electricity consumption of 2,500 kWh/year, basic supply) will pay approximately €95 gross less per year starting February 2026. Specifically, this is approximately €972 instead of approximately €1,067. This corresponds to a reduction of 8.9 percent compared to the current price.
