Two Swabian Clinics Rank Among Germany’s Best Hospitals

The magazine Focus-Gesundheit has once again included two Swabian institutions in its 2026 list of Germany's best hospitals.

These are the District Hospitals (Bezirkskrankenhaus, BKH) of Augsburg and Günzburg. The Bezirkskliniken announced this in their press release.

The BKH Augsburg, as a clinic for psychiatry, psychotherapy, and psychosomatics at the University of Augsburg, is recommended in this clinical list for the treatment of depression, dementia, as well as anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders. The Medical Director is Prof. Dr. Alkomiet Hasan. The clinic in Günzburg stands out for its treatment of dementia in its Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, and Psychosomatics (Acting Medical Director: Prof. Dr. Matthias W. Riepe), for stroke treatment in its Department of Neurology and Neurological Rehabilitation (Medical Director: Prof. Dr. Michael Ertl), and for spinal surgery in its Department of Neurosurgery (Medical Director: Prof. Dr. Christian Rainer Wirtz).

Günzburg: BKH Again Recognized as One of Germany’s Best Clinics

In the current issue, Focus-Gesundheit lists these institutions as “Top Clinics 2026” in Germany, as further detailed in the Bezirkskliniken press release. According to the editorial team, based on independent data collection, they rank among Germany’s outstanding specialized clinics. The evaluation reportedly considered factors such as case numbers, a large-scale survey among hospitals and doctors, data on staff, quality management, care and hygiene, certifications from relevant professional associations, and the number of doctors listed in the Focus “Top Medics” ranking working at the institution. Thus, the two Bezirkskliniken Schwaben institutions, which according to their own data employ around 5,300 staff in total, have repeated their success from previous years.
