German Military Registers 77 Attacks on Soldiers Since 2022

A total of 77 attacks on members of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) have been recorded since 2022.

This information comes from a query made by Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) to the Federal Ministry of Defence. According to the data, the ministry received 18 reports of suspected attacks in 2022.

In 2023, 20 attacks on soldiers were registered. For 2024, 24 attacks have been reported, and there have been 15 reports in the current year to date.

“Attacks on soldiers in public spaces are absolutely unacceptable,” stated a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defence. She added that the motives are often very subjective, making a definitive classification difficult. In a recent incident at the end of September, a Bundeswehr soldier in Sulzbach-Rosenberg was attacked and injured by two unknown men. According to the soldier’s statement, the suspects were speaking Russian. The State Security office is investigating.

“We support the civilian investigative authorities in their efforts to clarify the facts and prosecute crimes, wherever there is a need and opportunity to do so,” the ministry spokeswoman said. For the affected soldiers, several support services are available, including the Social Service, the Medical Service, and the Psychological Service, to provide counseling following experiences of violence.

These specialized services work closely together on the ground, from prevention to aftercare and the treatment of psychological trauma. Despite these attacks, the Ministry spokeswoman emphasized in an interview with BR that there has also been a noticeably increased level of public appreciation for military personnel.
