Dangerous Microbes Discovered in Dachau’s Tap Water

During a routine drinking water inspection, the Dachau municipal utilities (Stadtwerke Dachau) detected coliform bacteria in the tap water in the area of Münchener Straße.

These bacteria are considered indicators of potential water contamination and can point to hygiene deficiencies. Consequently, the Dachau Health Department issued a boil-water advisory for the entire supply area on Wednesday.

The affected areas include the town of Dachau with its districts of Obergrashof, Webling, and Steinkirchen; the municipality of Bergkirchen with its districts of Günding, Im Lus, Kienaden, Feldgeding, Neuhimmelreich, and Gröbenried; as well as parts of Karlsfeld, including Alte Bayernwerkstraße, Am Tiefen Graben, and Bajuwarenstraße 6 and 8.

Dachau Municipal Utilities Conducting Investigations

The Dachau municipal utilities are currently conducting intensive investigations at a total of 26 monitoring points within the network area. This is intended to pinpoint the affected area and identify the cause of the contamination.

The boil-water advisory applies to several uses: drinking tap water, preparing food and beverages, washing fruits, vegetables, and salad, brushing teeth, and cleaning open wounds. The water should be brought to a rolling boil once and then cooled for at least ten minutes. For practical reasons, using a kettle is recommended.

The water can continue to be used without concern for personal hygiene such as showering and bathing, cleaning clothes and dishes, and flushing toilets.

Aim to Restore Drinking Water Quality as Soon as Possible

The Dachau municipal utilities are working to determine the exact cause of the microbiological contamination and to restore drinking water quality as quickly as possible. The utility company is providing ongoing updates on the status of the investigations and the duration of the boil-water advisory via its website.

The Integrated Control Center in Fürstenfeldbruck has issued a hazard information alert on behalf of the district administration authority. The authorities are calling on citizens to inform their neighbors and to only call the emergency numbers 110 or 112 in case of an actual emergency.
