Since Monday morning, numerous train cancellations and major delays have affected this international route. Passengers report overcrowded platforms and wait times stretching for hours.
Cause: Unplanned Delays in Construction Work
A Deutsche Bahn spokesperson confirmed to Bavarian Broadcasting that the issues stem from unexpected delays in construction work between Rosenheim and Freilassing. This is impacting both regional and long-distance services.
Chaotic Scenes at Stations
Eyewitnesses describe chaotic conditions at Salzburg’s main station, where many travelers and commuters were stranded. Platforms were overcrowded, with passengers attempting to reach Freilassing via S-Bahn to continue their journeys on regional trains.
Current Route Status
The line between Rosenheim and Freilassing has now largely reopened, but only with single-track operation on a short section. However, delays and cancellations persist due to the backlog. While Deutsche Bahn estimates delays of around 20 minutes, Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) reports delays of up to 120 minutes. Some affected passengers even cite wait times of nearly three hours.
Additional Construction in the Region
These issues come on top of previously announced construction work between Rosenheim and Munich in early August, which includes overhead line and track renewals. Additionally, the Rosenheim-Kufstein route remains closed until August 18 due to planned construction.
