Despite clear warning signs prohibiting passage, they continued toward a weir, where they soon found themselves in grave danger. For one woman, the outing ended in hospital with severe injuries.
According to the fire department, the group got into serious trouble during their trip. One woman was injured so badly that she had to be airlifted to a hospital.
Police reported that the incident occurred at the Isar weir in Großhesselohe near Pullach. The group ignored prohibition signs and headed toward the weir. When the boat could no longer be steered due to the strong current, all four passengers jumped into the water. A 33-year-old woman was pulled underwater by the current but was brought back to the surface by another woman in the group.
The 33-year-old sustained severe injuries and was flown by rescue helicopter to a hospital in Munich. The three other passengers—two men and one woman—were able to reach a gravel bank nearby, where they were treated by emergency responders.
Meanwhile, the inflatable boat was caught by the current and pulled into a dangerous hydraulic at the weir. Firefighters and police then carried out an unusual rescue: a police helicopter hovered at low altitude over the whirlpool, using the rotor wash to push the boat free. Fire department swift-water rescuers then pulled it ashore.
Investigators later found evidence that two members of the group had been drinking alcohol at the time of the accident. Authorities are now investigating possible violations of the Bavarian Water Act.
