Federal police cleared the S-Bahn as a precautionary measure after discovering the unattended item onboard.
The incident occurred on July 1 aboard an S8 line train traveling from Munich Airport toward the city center. During the journey, a red hard-shell suitcase without any identifiable owner was noticed. Federal police were alerted and immediately initiated safety protocols.
As a precaution, authorities ordered the evacuation of the train, which was brought to a halt at Unterföhring station at 10:45 p.m. About 160 passengers were asked to leave the train. In coordination with Deutsche Bahn, it was decided not to leave the train on the platform to prevent further disruptions, especially on routes serving the airport.
The train was escorted under police supervision to the Steinhausen maintenance facility, where explosives experts from the bomb disposal unit conducted a detailed inspection of the suspicious item. After a preliminary all-clear, the suitcase was opened. It contained clothing and an Italian ham. Officials confirmed that the suitcase posed no threat.
Replacement transportation was quickly arranged for the evacuated passengers, allowing them to continue their journeys with only a brief delay. According to the Federal Police, additional assistance was not required at the scene.
The identity of the suitcase’s owner remained unknown. Since no identification tags or documents were found inside, the suitcase was handed over to Deutsche Bahn’s lost and found service.
In response to the incident, the Federal Police issued a renewed warning to passengers to never leave personal belongings unattended. Even a forgotten item, they cautioned, could lead to costly emergency responses and significant disruptions to rail services.
