For the 66-year-old native of Canada, this marks a return to his homeland after decades of coaching abroad.
Herbert’s contract with FC Bayern runs through the 2025–2026 season and will expire next summer. Following the conclusion of his tenure in Munich, he will assume leadership of Canada’s national team, with the goal of guiding the squad through the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games. The federation did not release details about the length or terms of his new contract.
The announcement came without immediate comment from FC Bayern. Just a day earlier, the club had revealed that managing director Marko Pesic would step down at the end of 2025 after nearly 15 years in the role. News of Herbert’s departure, coming so soon afterward, was unexpected.
In the federation’s official release, Herbert was quoted as saying: “I felt incredibly honored and very happy about the opportunity to coach my home country.”
Canada’s men’s basketball team won the bronze medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup in Asia, while Germany, under Herbert’s leadership, captured the world title in a stunning performance. Herbert had previously represented Canada as a player in the 1980s and held coaching roles with the national team in later years.
In Germany, Herbert gained extensive coaching experience, not only with Bayern Munich but also with clubs in Würzburg, Frankfurt, and Berlin. His deep familiarity with European basketball and international tournaments made him a sought-after figure for national team leadership roles.
With Herbert now set to lead one of the world’s most promising basketball teams, Canada is expected to build on its recent international successes heading into the next major competitions.
