The work will affect passengers on several tram lines at once and will last almost a month, through 31 July inclusive.
Why the repairs are needed
According to the municipal utility Stadtwerke München (SWM), which is responsible for the track network, the switches and track crossing near the Klinik an der Isar have reached the end of their service life of up to 15 years. Because of this wear, the company decided to replace them completely rather than carry out spot repairs, meaning tram service on this section will be suspended entirely. At the same time, the traffic light system on Sonnenstraße will be renewed and road work will be carried out at the junction with Schwanthalerstraße; the two projects were combined so as not to close off traffic in the city centre twice.
MVG to halt tram service between Sendlinger Tor and Stachus for almost a month
The restrictions will run from 6 to 31 July. During this period, buses will replace trams, running between the stops Lenbachplatz, Karlsplatz (Stachus) and Sendlinger Tor. The changes will affect lines 16 and 17, line 18, lines 27 and 28, as well as the night routes N17 and N27.
Lines 16 and 17
The western section — from Romanplatz and Amalienburgstraße to Stachus — will keep its normal schedule. The stop at Karlsplatz (Stachus) will be moved to the platform used by lines 19/21 on Prielmayerstraße. The eastern section — from St. Emmeram and Effnerplatz to Sendlinger Tor — will continue to operate without changes.
Line 18
The route between Gondrellplatz and Hauptbahnhof Süd will remain unchanged. From there, the tram will switch onto the route of lines 20/21 and continue to Hochschule München, stopping at all intermediate stations. In the east, the line will run between Schwanseestraße and Sendlinger Tor.
Lines 27 and 28
The Sendlinger Tor stop will be temporarily closed. As with lines 16 and 17, Karlsplatz (Stachus) will also be moved to the platform used by lines 19/21 on Prielmayerstraße.
Night routes N17 and N27
N17 will continue running between Amalienburgstraße and Stachus without changes. On the eastern section — from Effnerplatz to Karlsplatz (Stachus) — passengers will be transferred to buses. N27 will operate as usual between Petuelring and Stachus, while between Stachus and the Großhesseloher Brücke trams will likewise be replaced by buses.
What the operators themselves recommend
MVG recommends using the U-Bahn and S-Bahn in the city centre, and suggests covering the stretch between Stachus and Sendlinger Tor on foot — a walk of about 8 to 10 minutes, which may well prove faster than waiting for a bus. Additional strain on the transport system is also being caused by other construction work across the city, at the Luise-Kiesselbach-Tunnel and on the bridge at Landshuter Allee. Meanwhile, 2026 marks an anniversary year for the Munich tram: the network is celebrating 150 years since its first line opened.
In summary, the repairs will affect one of the busiest sections of Munich’s tram network. Until the end of July, passengers should check their routes in advance via the MVGO app or the mvg.de website and allow extra time for their journeys, especially during peak hours.
