American service members deliberately threw dozens of firecrackers and fireworks at passing vehicles

A serious incident in the Upper Palatinate involving a gross violation of public safety has sparked a wave of indignation across Bavaria.

Three young American service members, traveling in a private SUV, turned a routine drive on federal highways into a direct threat to the lives and property of others. According to official law enforcement reports, the detainees used illegal pyrotechnic devices, which they intentionally threw from the vehicle’s windows toward other motorists.

The events unfolded last Monday, March 30, at approximately 8:40 PM. On sections of the B299 and B22 routes near the town of Erbendorf (Tirschenreuth district), lit firecrackers began flying from the windows of a white Hyundai crossover with Amberg-Sulzbach (“AS”) license plates. According to witnesses, the soldiers, aged 20 and 21, acted deliberately, deploying between 20 and 30 explosive devices specifically aimed at oncoming vehicles.

The dangerous situation was brought to an end thanks to the vigilance of a passenger in a vehicle following them. The witness not only promptly informed the police by phone but also acted as a coordinator, providing real-time data on the suspects’ maneuvers and exact location throughout their journey.

The police operation concluded 20 kilometers later in Grafenwöhr (Neustadt an der Waldnaab district). This town is well known as the site of Europe’s largest U.S.-managed military training area; however, the suspects’ military status did not grant them immunity from a thorough search.

Inside the private crossover, police officers discovered a significant arsenal of pyrotechnics lacking mandatory certification and prohibited in Germany. Furthermore, numerous containers of e-cigarette liquid illegally imported from the Czech Republic were seized during the search. Due to the discovery of contraband goods, the customs service immediately joined the investigation.

Following the completion of all necessary initial investigative procedures, the three service members were officially handed over to the U.S. Military Police for further proceedings.

Currently, the Bavarian Police are actively seeking other drivers whose vehicles may have been struck by firecrackers or who were endangered by the soldiers’ actions. While there are currently no official reports of injuries or significant property damage, law enforcement authorities are urging all potential witnesses to come forward and provide testimony.
