Tegernsee Valley Hosts Silver Jubilee Montgolfiade Balloon Festival

Every year in early February, the Tegernsee Valley transforms into a vibrant hub for the Montgolfiade. We explore what visitors can expect during the milestone anniversary of this popular outdoor event.

Numerous hot-air balloons are taking to the skies over Lake Tegernsee for the 25th time. The occasion is the Tegernsee Valley Montgolfiade—an event where guests can either admire the balloons from the ground or take flight themselves. Throughout the week of February 1 to 8, a diverse program has been prepared for all attendees.

Those wishing to see Tegernsee from above can book a hot-air balloon flight to enjoy bird’s-eye views of the Alpine foothills. Flights are conducted daily through February 8. The meeting point is in Bad Wiessee at approximately 08:30 AM; however, the exact time depends on weather conditions and is confirmed via email the evening before. The entire excursion lasts about three hours, including one hour and 15 minutes of flight time, with the remainder dedicated to launch preparations, packing the balloon after landing, and return transportation to Bad Wiessee. Tickets are priced at 280 euros.

Model Balloons Along the Bad Wiessee Promenade

For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, several attractions are situated around the lake. Along the promenade in Bad Wiessee, visitors are offered an expanded selection of gastronomic services. In addition, model balloons are on display for the public. On Sunday, the program featured performances by the traditional Schäffler dancers and the “Lake Ghosts of Gmund” ensemble.

Balloon Glow: The Highlight of the Montgolfiade

On Thursday, February 5, the traditional “Fox Hunt” took place. This is not a pursuit of actual animals but a competition between balloon pilots. For those who want more than just the sight of the balloons, a themed party was held on Saturday, February 7. The celebration, featuring music, a bar, and culinary offerings, was organized in the garden of the Hotel Post in Bad Wiessee under the motto “Winter Glow—Balloons, Beats, and Bar.”

However, the main event remains the Balloon Glow, which took place on Friday, February 6, at the Sonnenbichl slope in Bad Wiessee. As darkness falls, the balloon burners are ignited in sync with music. From 5:00 PM, adults and children were able to admire the glowing envelopes of the giant structures. This was followed by performances from the rock band “Merged” and the percussion group “Bateria Z.”
