Munich Cemetery to Close Temporarily Following Discovery of WWII Munitions

Munich / Lochhausen — World War II munitions have been discovered in the immediate vicinity of the Lochhausen Cemetery. The explosive ordnance disposal service plans to destroy the items through a controlled detonation on Monday, January 26.

The operation is scheduled to take place between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Authorities have announced that the cemetery will be completely closed on that day as a safety precaution. There is currently no acute danger to visitors, so the site will remain open as usual until the day of the technical work.

Extract from the Official Ordinance

On Monday, January 26, 2026, an exclusion zone with a radius of 250 meters will be established in Munich (District of Aubing-Lochhausen-Langwied). This zone encompasses the agricultural area west of Eschenrieder Straße, north of Pollenwiesenweg, and south of Scharinenbachstraße.

The final boundaries will be determined by on-site security measures. Entering or remaining within the exclusion zone—regardless of whether on private or public property—is strictly prohibited on January 26, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The cordon includes the fields along Eschenrieder Straße and the eastern section of the Lochhausen Cemetery.

The following addresses are fully within the restricted zone:

  • Eschenrieder Str. 31
  • Eschenrieder Str. 27, 27a, and 29

Note: A special rule applies to the residential buildings at Eschenrieder Straße 27, 27a, and 29. Residents may remain in rooms facing south between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM, but they must stay in that part of the building and are not permitted to leave during this window.

The exclusion zone also partially covers portions of the following properties:

  • Am Lochhauser Hügel 6, 8, and 8a
  • Schussenrieder Str. 36
  • Scharinenbachstr. 7

The exact perimeter of the exclusion zone (indicated by hatching on the plan) is provided in the appendix, which forms an integral part of this ordinance.
