Far-Left Activists Occupy SPD Headquarters in Munich for Political Protest

A group of left-wing activists occupied the headquarters of the Bavarian SPD. Following a police operation, the building was cleared, which was subsequently followed by a protest rally.

Several activists occupied the headquarters of the Bavarian branch of the SPD in Munich on Thursday, prompting a significant police response. A group of young individuals from the left-wing political spectrum entered the building and “drew attention to themselves,” according to a police spokesperson.

Law enforcement officials reported that a staff member sustained minor injuries when the group forced open the door to the Munich office. The woman reported pain in her arm following the incident.

Police officers arrived quickly in multiple patrol cars. Some of the twenty participants—aged between 18 and 57, including seven women and thirteen men—had to be carried out of the building by officers. According to official reports, the activists represented an anti-fascist group.

Protest Against Syria Policy

The protesters characterized their action as an “occupation” of the SPD headquarters. They claimed their actions were intended to protest “against the German government’s silence regarding mass killings in Rojava,” Syria.

Following the occupation, police reported that a spontaneous rally began outside. The number of participants was estimated to be between several dozen and more than one hundred people. During the actions inside the building and the subsequent demonstration, no violent clashes were initially recorded. Munich police have launched an investigation into charges of breach of the peace and trespassing.
