Munich — Commuters in Munich must brace for significant restrictions. The Verdi union plans to call upon local transport workers in the city and throughout Bavaria for warning strikes in the near future. The cause of the conflict is the state-level collective bargaining agreement. Following the first round of negotiations, the union reported that it saw no other way to compel employers to make concessions.
Warning Strikes Could Paralyze Transport Across Bavaria
The service workers’ union announced that major warning strikes could paralyze the Free State, including Munich, before the next round of negotiations scheduled for February 13. At the heart of the dispute is a demand for higher wages for employees of Bavarian transport companies. The union has noted a lack of progress in tariff negotiations. To increase pressure, Verdi representatives intend to call for work stoppages in the coming weeks.
Munich Public Utilities Present Emergency Transport Plan
According to Munich Public Utilities (SWM), which includes the Munich Transport Company (MVG), an emergency program is planned. The U3 and U6 subway lines are intended to maintain a ten-minute service interval. Trams 20 and 25 are also of high priority and should run every 20 minutes. An SWM representative suggested that subway operations would likely be severely restricted. However, due to the large number of partner companies MVG works with for bus services, restrictions for bus passengers are expected to be minimal.
In a comment provided to our editorial team, Verdi representatives clarified: “As of Wednesday afternoon, January 28, a specific date for the local transport strike has not yet been determined.” However, the union promised to inform the public well in advance once exact details are available.
