Munich Transit Association Introduces New Child Travel Rules and Expands Tariff Zones

Tickets, regulations, and territorial coverage: these changes come into effect for the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV) on January 1.

At the start of the year, many aspects of the association’s operations will change. A single-zone tariff is being introduced, and the conditions for traveling with children on S-Bahns, U-Bahns, buses, and trams are being simplified. While the MVV coverage area is expanding, the cost of travel is also increasing. Below is an overview of the key innovations.

Price Increases

First, the unpleasant news: MVV tickets will become an average of 3.9 percent more expensive starting January 1. The price of a stripe ticket (Streifenkarte) will rise by 90 cents to €18.70. A single ticket for Zone M will increase by ten cents to €4.20. Monthly passes will rise in price by an average of 4.3–4.4 percent. For example, an IsarCard for Zone M plus 2 will cost €5.90 more in the future, totaling €142.50. Many families are now calculating whether a standard MVV ticket remains profitable or if it is more practical to switch to the Deutschlandticket. However, the latter will also increase by five euros and will cost €63 starting in 2026.

New Rules for Traveling with Children

“The MVV tariff will become even more convenient for families with children,” noted association spokesperson Sonja Schneider. Now, any number of one’s own children aged 6 to 14 may travel for free not only with a weekly or monthly pass but also with a Single Day Ticket. Additionally, a maximum of three non-related children (children of acquaintances or friends) is permitted. Note: Grandchildren are treated as one’s own children, but nephews and nieces are not. Furthermore, preschool children over the age of six traveling as part of a kindergarten group may now use MVV services free of charge.

Single-Zone Tariff

In the future, one stripe on the Streifenkarte will be valid not only for short trips of up to four stops but also for travel within an entire zone. Representatives of the association emphasized that this will reduce the cost of some trips by 50 percent.

Expansion to Altötting and Kempten

Territorial Expansion: On January 1, the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the city and district of Landshut, and the district of Mühldorf will join the MVV. Following this, 4.15 million people will live within the association’s tariff coverage area. The expansion process will not end there. Negotiations for the entry of the Ostallgäu district and the city of Kaufbeuren as of January 1, 2027, have been successfully completed, pending approval from association members.

“A study is currently being conducted regarding Altötting; joining is possible from January 1, 2027, or later, but a decision there will only be made in March 2026,” the spokesperson explained. She added: “Furthermore, requests have been received from Traunstein, Kempten, and Oberallgäu, for which we are currently preparing studies.” These regions could join the association no earlier than January 1, 2028. A merger with the Augsburg Transport Association (AVV) is also planned, with negotiations still ongoing.
