Munich officially bids for World Athletics Championships in 2029 or 2031

The Bavarian capital is solidifying its position as a global sporting powerhouse. On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the Munich City Council approved a high-profile bid to host the World Athletics Championships.

Following the success of the 2022 European Championships, the city is now targeting the world stage for either 2029 or 2031, with a strategic preference for the latter.

This ambitious move is seen as a crucial “rehearsal” for Munich‘s ultimate goal: bringing the Olympic and Paralympic Games back to the city in 2036, 2040, or 2044—an ambition recently bolstered by a successful local referendum.

Strategic focus on 2031

While World Athletics requires interested cities to submit bids for both the 2029 and 2031 editions, Munich has officially prioritized 2031. This decision is based on a packed international sporting calendar already set for the summer of 2029:

  • May 2029: The International German Gymnastics Festival will take over the city.
  • July/August 2029: Munich (specifically the Allianz Arena) will serve as a key venue for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2029, which was awarded to Germany in December 2025.
  • Infrastructure Capacity: Authorities believe hosting a third major world event in 2029 would create an unsustainable burden on the city’s transport and logistics systems.

A nine-day festival of elite sport

The championships are projected to bring approximately 2,200 athletes from 195 nations to Munich. The Olympic Stadium, currently undergoing extensive modernization, will serve as the primary venue.

  • Events: Over nine days in September, 50 medal events will take place.
  • Urban Integration: Following the 2022 model, marathons and race-walking events will be held on city streets, allowing residents to experience the action for free.
  • Organization: The project will be managed by Olympiapark München GmbH in partnership with the German Athletics Association (DLV).

Financial structure and funding

The estimated cost of the event is €107 million for 2029 or €110 million for 2031. To move forward, the city has mandated a “three-way” funding split:

  • Federal Government: 33.3%
  • State of Bavaria: 33.3%
  • City of Munich: 33.3% (capped at approximately €35–37 million)

Sports Referent Verena Dietl confirmed that preliminary discussions with federal and state officials have been overwhelmingly positive, mirroring the successful financing model used for previous major events.

The Road to the Olympics

The bid is a central pillar of Munich’s broader strategy to secure a future Olympic bid. With a 66.4% “Yes” vote in the October 2025 referendum, the city has a clear mandate to pursue the Summer Games. A successful World Athletics Championships in 2031 would demonstrate Munich‘s ability to host elite-level global competitions using existing, renovated infrastructure, strengthening its case against other potential national bidders like Berlin or Hamburg.

Key Deadlines:

  • Early April 2026: Submission of full bid files and financial guarantees to World Athletics.
  • September 2026: Final decision by the World Athletics Council on the host cities for 2029 and 2031.
