Munich Establishes Memorial for Victims of Attack at Verdi Demonstration

Munich – A place of silence, reflection, and remembrance: The city has created a site directly at the Flaucher to honor those who lost their lives in the treacherous attack on the Verdi union demonstration in Munich.

A bench with a memorial plaque has been installed, and a tree has been planted beside it. All of this was done discreetly—at the request of the bereaved families, who wished to avoid a large public spectacle.

Attack on Verdi Demonstration in Munich: 44 People Seriously Injured, Mother and Child Succumb to Injuries

During the attack on February 13, 2025, a 24-year-old Afghan man deliberately drove his car into a group of demonstrators in the morning. The group was part of a procession organized by the Verdi union. The attack left 44 people with serious injuries. A 37-year-old woman named Amel and her two-year-old daughter Hafsa died from their injuries two days later. Many of those affected—including Amel—were municipal employees.

The city council had agreed to establish the memorial at the end of February. At that time, Left Party leader Stefan Jagel was the only one permitted to deliver a speech in the plenary session, in which he thanked the many helpers who cared for the victims even days after the cowardly act. “It will take months, perhaps years, for the wounds to heal—if they ever do. But as a society, we have a responsibility: to be there for one another.”

After the Attack on the Verdi Demonstration in Munich: City Council Sets Up Aid Fund for Victims

And to those who seek to instrumentalize this terrible moment for their political purposes, who sow hatred instead of showing compassion: “Perhaps it is worth pausing for a moment and reflecting on the important things in all our lives—and allowing humanity to prevail.”

Additionally, the city council approved €500,000 in support for the victims of the fatal attack on February 13. Following a cross-party motion, the council decided to establish a corresponding aid fund. This fund is intended primarily to support those directly physically and psychologically harmed by the attack, as well as their close relatives affected by the trauma.
