According to preliminary data from law enforcement agencies, a suicide is currently suspected. The detainee was in custody awaiting the completion of the investigation, but now a tragic final point has been placed in this case.
The suspected attacker, who wounded people last week at the busy Würzburg Main Station, was found without signs of life in his pre-trial detention cell. According to police information, all circumstances point to suicide, but the details of what happened behind the closed doors of the prison still remain unclear. A representative of the Würzburg Prosecutor’s Office initially could not explain exactly by what method this action was committed.
As is customary in such situations, the prosecutor’s office initiated an investigation into the fact of death. During this procedure, it is established whether there are signs of guilt of third parties or negligence on the part of the staff — a representative of the department reported. In connection with the death of the person involved, the main criminal proceedings in the case of the knife attack are terminated. Nevertheless, a separate investigation aimed at finding the true motives for his violent act will likely continue to provide answers to the victims and the public.
Investigation in the case of attempted murder
According to available information, the 35-year-old suspect suddenly attacked three believers at their information stand on the morning of February 23. The reasons for this outburst of aggression remain a mystery. The mental state of the native of Afghanistan had not been determined by investigators until the last moment. Jehovah’s Witnesses are a Christian community with their own interpretation of the Bible, and the investigation was checking a version of religious intolerance.
The victims, aged 51, 55, and 68, received light wounds that only by a lucky chance did not become fatal. The decisive actions of passers-by, among whom was a plainclothes police officer, allowed the aggressor to be quickly neutralized. The Afghan man was detained at the crime scene. The police were conducting investigative actions on the fact of attempted murder and attempt to cause dangerous bodily harm. It is worth noting that information about mental illnesses or drug use by the man was previously absent.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the foreigner had lived in Germany since 2023. His application for asylum was officially rejected by the authorities. The 35-year-old man remained in the country only on the basis of a temporary permit, which gave a stay of deportation. This suspended state and legal uncertainty could have been an additional factor of stress leading to the fatal end.
The Ministry of Justice in Munich emphasized that the prevention of suicides in places of deprivation of liberty has priority importance. Employees and medics are obliged to identify the possible risk of suicide already during the primary medical examination. The staff of correctional institutions is obliged to report immediately if prisoners seem depressed or are in a poor state of health. In the event of a death in a cell, according to information from the ministry’s spokesperson, an autopsy is always scheduled to exclude any doubts about the causes of what happened.Source: DPA
